3 1/2 stars* 4 stars for the food. 3 stars for the service. Although we had exceptional service, some things were forgotten about. For example, we asked twice for an additional kids coloring book and it was never brought out. We asked for two of the kid's meals to be brought out with the appetizers, but only one came out. The food was very, very good, so we will most likely give this place another shot. Tip: The french onion soup is not worth $11. It's a bowl of cheese with about 1" of soup in a crock- sort of like eating a bowl of mozzarella sticks. One person in our party had the steak with potatoes au grautin and it was DELIGHTFUL! We all had a bite of the steak because it looked sooooo good. Addtl Tip: Dogs are allowed on the patio! Woof woof! :)

There's a lot to like about Four Dogs Tavern. For starters there is their outdoor seating area. It's very nice, very large, relatively spacious. There's even a little faux-waterfall thing out there that adds a relaxing ambiance. And they allow dogs which is a plus for animal lovers and dog owners. Their food is also impressive. Their dishes range from classic to eclectic. I love their open face ham sandwich, and the pear salad is also delicious. The only thing that has disappointed me was the service. It's incredibly slow. Both times that I have visited this restaurant it has taken quite some time to even be seen by a server to get water, and then forever for them to take your order. The second time around we asked for our check when our food was brought to us because we knew it'd be a long wait until the server would come back to check in on us. Tip: don't go here if you are in any sort of rush or time crunch. Although the service left a bad taste in my mouth, the food didn't. There is a lot more on the menu that I still wish to try and that will keep me coming back.

Epic watermelon salad served with arugula, goat cheese & red wine vinaigrette. The hummus platter was also good, but the hummus really needed more fresh lemon juice in it. I come from Spanish roots, hence I grew up preparing and eating a lot of Gazpacho, and the one served at Four Dogs is very good, not the best I have had, but still fresh and tasty and they put some crab on top. I kinda wish they would put a little more crab, but alas, the ingredients were very fresh. Someone else at my table ordered the chicken nachos, which I sampled and it too was delicious. Another person at my table ordered the Mushroom Flatbread and I wish I had asked if I could sample that too. I could tell by looking at it they they put freshly sliced mushrooms on it. I think I will have to order that next time. Another winner is that they sell cider and wine. As I am not a beer drinker this is another plus.

We visited the Four Dogs as part of a private party. We did not pay, so I cannot comment on price. The worst of the food was merely "good", and quite a few items were top shelf (try the artisnal cheese platter). Service was very good, with only a few lapses. The restaurant itself is a wonderful old home, decorated with colonial household items and old artwork. The chef took time to visit our party before we began, and two teenaged members of our party ran into him later. He was only too happy to discuss the finer points of the foods served with them. This would be an excellent place for a business meal or a romantic dinner.

Sunday night of Memorial Day weekend, my five friends and I decided after pigging out the night before on our own masterful creations that none of us really wanted to cook anything, so we took to Yelp and found Four Dogs Tavern - a great option for warm evenings and large parties. With a huge menu catering to every taste imaginable and a solid cocktail list, we were more than excited to try it out. Although our group of six arrived on the later end of the evening, the service at Four Dogs was friendly, warm and accommodating. Right off the bat our server took our cocktail order, was back with water lickity-split followed up by the drinks. Then we had a few minutes to mull over the vast menu, and all ended up ordering from different sections. I had the feta, watermelon and arugula salad which was absolutely delicious - fresh, refreshing and full of flavor. I then had the margherita flatbread that, while tasty, was a bit on the salty side and small-ish for $13. My friend had the mushroom flatbread which was twice the size and only $2 more - a much better option considering the mushrooms are local and it's topped with goat cheese. Also on the table was the snails Burgundy - much like classic escargots but topped with teensy puff pasty made to mimic shells, the stout and gouda petit fondu (which was HUGE), the mahi mahi tacos (a great choice - my husband devoured the whole enormous plate), the meatball parmesan (do not miss this dish!) and the gnocchi with Italian sausage. Everyone was totally pleased with their dishes and drinks, to boot. I had a glass of Malbec that was slightly on the sweet side and perfectly juicy. I loved it. Prices are reasonable, the rustic setting is charming (especially the back patio) and the service was great. Unfortunately we weren't able to have desserts as the kitchen closed, and I would have loved it if the server had told us the kitchen was closing and offered desserts to us before that happened, but whatever - I was full enough to do without dessert anyway. All in all, a great option for this area - I would return happily!

We stop here after visits to Longwood Gardens 3 or 4 times per year. If the weather is nice, the outdoor seating is where it's out. If not, enjoy the rustic charm inside. Food is definitely upscale - great cheese selections, fantastic flatbreads and a really nice assortment of smaller plates (the grilled octopus was amazing - you reading this Valanni Restaurant?!?!). Choose from a decent craft beer selection to enjoy with your meal. Service has always been good and friendly.

I am updating my review since I gave this place another try. I ordered the mushroom soup again. Instead of it being over-whipped to foam, it was mushroom perfection. One of the best mushroom soups I have had in a while. Our entrees were very tasty as well. I still can't give this a higher rating because prices are entirely too high and the back dining room feels like a cave. I would recommend Four Dogs if you don't mind over spending on a good meal and as long as you sit in the cozy bar area.

I always hate to leave my Boxer dogs at home in their crates when we go out! I heard about Four Dogs Tavern at the beginning of the summer and have waited months for a nice cool evening to give their outdoor space a try with the dogs. We were a little nervous going in since we are not really used to taking our pups to restaurants. Sharon, the dogs and I were greeted right away and immediately made welcome as the hostess escorted us to our table. When our waitress said hello to us, bent down to let the dogs lick her face, and ask if she could bring them a bowl of water, we knew we were at the right place! I had a lovely glass of Chardonnay. Sharon and I split the cheese puffs for an appetizer and a margarita flat bread pizza for the main meal. Both were very good but a little on the salty side (hence the 3 vs. 5 stars). The dogs got two complimentary "sliders" which they loved ... and no complaints about salt : ) It was such a great experience, we plan to return again and again. Some things on the menu we plan to try in the future are their burgers (which smelled amazing), the ruben, the clams, and the mac and cheese .... we watched as all these dishes went by us to other customers and they all looked amazing.

Been here many times and enjoyed the food, but the customer service this weekend was pretty messed up, and we left really, really annoyed. Our server was very friendly and apologetic, but in our opinion, the restaurant was making some really bad decisions about how they treated their customers. 1. There was a charity bike race using their parking lot, so customers of the restaurant had to pay $5 to park in a field two blocks away. As a person who has trouble walking, i didn't appreciate this. 2. The bathrooms in the restaurant were closed even for paying customers because they didn't want race participants using their bathrooms. They wouldn't even let us wash our hands...and offered hand wipes. Paying customers had to use Porta-Potties across the parking lot that had no hand washing facilities. 3. We found a large hair in our food and they didn't take it off the check. Food was good as always, but we felt really mistreated.

Great food, great atmosphere, great service. They're probably more of a 4 1/2 star but I don't have that option. Maybe just say a high 4 fringing on a 5. We took our dog to eat on the patio for lunch. It was a little bit of a drive to get here but it was very scenic so it was worth the little extra trek. They have umbrella seating on the patio and they also have a covered area for the vampires who are fearful of any sunlight touching their lily-white skin. Service was fast, good, and friendly. She even had a sense of humor. Everyone was very relaxed here which was also a plus. There was just an overall good vibe. The food was so good we almost took our last crab nacho to-go but thought that was ridiculous. All night all we talked about, "If only I had that crab nacho right now." If you're a dog owner this is a great place 'cause there is plenty of space for your pooch to sit with you comfortably and they bring a small bowl of water for him/her as soon as you get there. Another fun thing to note is the building is really old so the bar inside looks sort of like a bar from the Old West. It kind of made me want to drink. I stuck with my iced tea but I like the idea of drinking somewhere where I feel like I'm in a time warp. Even the floorboards creaked like I was in an Old West saloon. This seems like a great place for day or night time dining, inside or out, or just going to grab a fun drink. I'm pretty sure this is a place we will frequent often.

Four dogs is a great spot for people of all ages, whether you are with your significant other, girls night, family dine-out night, or if you just wanna sit and enjoy a beer with your pup. Dogs are welcomed, if not encouraged to come, so if you are a dog and a foodie, this is the spot for you. The menu offers everything from great sandwiches, to fish entrees, to flatbreads, pasta dishes and steak dinners. They really do offer a great variety of choices of food, as well as dining experiences. The outdoor seating is phenomenal if you can get a table. Inside there are two options: by the fireplace and bar (where there are sometimes 1-2 person bands playing light music) or the dining room (more geared toward quieter diners). I love this place because of the great food and people around. GET THE FLATBREADS

My wife and I went to the Four Dogs Cafe in West Chester last evening for her Birthday, the service and food was fabulous. My wife ordered the roasted chicken, which included the breast, thigh and leg. My wife only will eat white meat, and she wound end up eating the entire chicken. My meal was wonderful, I ordered the BBQ, pork sandwich with an everything roll and the fries were to die for. I thought the meal could not get any better until the desert came out. We ordered the lemon ma-range ice-cream pie, OMG was it GREAT. Our whole experience was fantastic and we plan on going back again soon, by the way, the service is just as good as the food

Jack and Mitya are taking us to the best restaurants! We ate our heart out at Four Dogs. 7 hr slow cooked pork with cole slaw--yum! Nice sauce and very Crab nachos- real crab! Yum!! Very tasty green sauce and chili on them. Pear salad--very fresh and loved the combination of everything Mushroom and goat cheese flat bread-one of our favorites! Steak tartare--my favorite. Never had something like this. On a bed or arugula with rye bread and cheese crackers. So tasty!!! Tavern ham--yum!! Thin slices of ham piled nicely with mustard and crisp apple. Tasty combo Pommes frittes-can't mess up fries. Too much food for four at this point Sticky toffee-yum! Mint chocolate chip ice cream Only thing that disappointed me....we were on back patio and there was a group of women smoking close by. It bothered us enough that we asked our waiter if smoking was allowed, and it was not. He said he would take care of it. Minutes later, the manager came by and basically told us that rather than accommodating us and asking the smokers to put out their cigarettes, she wanted to move us to another table where we may not smell the smoke. I would return, but if this happened again, I may lose interested in returning more.

I really really wanted to love Four Dogs! I heard so many good things about the place but I honestly wasn't that impressed. The atmosphere is great, very cozy and romantic! However, the service needs a little work and their prices don't merit the quality of the food. I started with a French onion soup ($11 for a crock of soup, like really?). I saw the price and I obviously wasn't forced to order it but I just assumed it would be worth it for $11... Not so much. We also got the parmesan calamari which was very good!! My fiancé got the horseradish salmon which he says was decent and I got the slow cooked pork which was delish! However, the service was sub-par and the place wasn't even busy. I waitressed for 6 years so I always give servers the benefit of the doubt but I just didn't understand. I will give Four Dogs another chance in the summer because the patio looks adorable. Hopefully I can give them a better review then!

Love this charming tavern! The outside seating is surrounded by greenery - some filled with loads of tiny lights. Love that your dog is welcome to join you! My favorite spot indoors is in the bar area -especially when it is cold outside and the fireplace is lit. The ambiance is one thing, the food is another - it's delish! Our favorite appetizer is the Fig and Goat Cheese Flat bread. We've eaten here three times now and have never been disappointed. Definitely recommend giving it a try.

The setting is phenomenal and unmatched in the warmer months, especially since you can bring your dog. But, unfortunately, more and more we are shying away from this local spot due to overcrowding, bad service a few times, and overpriced & unimpressive food. They need to freshen up their menu, lower their prices, and get rid of the bad apples. A better waiting area would help too (more seating? an outside bar, perhaps? or a parking lot food truck?), not to mention more vegetarian options. Until then it's just a place to see and be seen on a sunny June afternoon, and that's it.

Went again for a casual quick dinner. Mushroom Soup. Still one of the best I've ever eaten! Like last meal good. Burger and Fries w a side of garlic aioli. Burger was just okay, not terrible, not spectacular, pretty run of the mill. Fries were good as always, the side of garlic aioli makes

One of the greatest outdoor dining experiences in the area. The variety of food choices are wonderful. From oysters on the half shell, the fried calamari and crab nachos to the fondue and charcuterie boards, the starters can't be beat. The crab cakes here are now my #1. The half portions available on some entrees are a nice choice and are really more than enough. The flatbreads fired on a board are my favorite. I actually have to force myself to try something other than the grilled margherita thin crust flatbread, which is Devine with its basil drizzle. Service if friendly and responsive. One suggestion is to serve full size cosmos. The glasses were very small. Also an expanded wine list would be nice. Although I will still keep coming back regardless. This place is a GEM!

A fun bar. In the summer you can sit outside on the deck with many umbrellas so you don't fry in the sun. Dogs are welcome, if you have one, bring him or her on a leash please. A nice listing of beers and well stocked bar. Inside it's comfortable with a long wooden bar top and an open fireplace, great spot for winter meet ups. The restaurant has tables from the bar area into the dining room. Food is very good with an eclectic collection of things to choose, from flat bread pizza and hummus to salads, burgers and fish. My personal favorite appetizer is the meatball - just one big meatball in a bowl with cheese and breadcrumbs baked on top. Add beer. I'm really classy, I know. Bone to pick? The bathrooms are just foul. Four Dogs, why don't you spend a few bucks and renovate these? They say a lot about your commitment to cleanliness, so rip it all out and redo. I always say, the look of the bathrooms tells you what the kitchen is probably like. Enough said.

I really wanted this to be my new favorite place....but it just fell short on so many things. I had heard good things & when I arrived I really loved the atmosphere. We sat on the patio & it was a warm and friendly environment with a little waterfall & twinkling lights. It started going downhill when I saw the prices. $8 for tomato bisque, $11 for french onion soup?? How can you charge fine dining prices for casual food? My husband got a pear salad with grilled chicken and was charged $22!! For a grilled chicken salad?? Our bill was $70 (incl tax & tip) and all we had was two sodas, hummus app, a turkey burger and the salad! REALLY?? Also, the waitstaff is too busy...my server didn't come over to take our drink order for about 10 min (but she was very nice when she did finally come over). Then, when we received our food (after a pretty long time), everything was all messed up and had to be sent back to be fixed. For a great meal (with a similar menu) at much more reasonable prices, I suggest Iron Hill Brewery. Way better deal!

I have been to Four Dogs a few times before writing this review. On my first visit to the restaurant my friend and I had the cheese fondue dinner with the fingerling potatoes, chorizo and apples. It was the best thing we had ever eaten and is quite honestly the reason why we come back; that and their Riesling! Last weekend we paid another visit, and this time we sampled off the actual menu. The mushroom flat bread, calamari and gnocchi with sausage and broccoli rabe were very good! Four Dogs has a really great menu and I will most definitely be returning!

My husband and I took our friends out to Four Dogs last night for dinner and it was really great. I have been there before and its always been good, but last night the food and the beer, the live music was just wonderful. The men ordered the jerk chicken wings which were plentiful and delicious. I ordered the beet sald (the best $ 13 dollar beet salad I have ever had) The crabcake was ordered by my friend and she loved it. The pickles seemed to be home made, the french fries were standard- greasy and blah. There was enough food leftover for leftovers so no one left hungry thats for sure! They have a great beer list, with a nice variety of bottled and beers on tap. After dinner we went downstairs to the bar area which was packed. The fireplace was burning, the atmopshere was laid back and rustic, with candlelight illuminating the room. The band that played was great. We will go back very soon!

We have become very frequent visitors at Four Dogs after my Fiance's family bought a house right around the corner. We even came here for celebratory lunch after our engagement on my birthday this year! You can't beat the scenery whether you are sitting inside or outside. Inside you have rustic exposed wooden beams, cozy heavy wooden tables with thick candles, and stone walls. Outside you have the beautiful view of the surrounding fields and farms. If you are familiar with the scenery in the area, then you won't be surprised how long the wait can be to eat outside on the weekends! One of our biggest problems when we eat here is deciding on what to eat. I don't think any of us(normally a party of 6)has every ordered anything we haven't loved. The burgers are delicious and always cooked exactly how we request. The pulled pork is amazingly moist and tasty without being drenched in BBQ sauce. The longhorn meatloaf is delicious and wonderful sitting upon a bed of cheesy scalloped potatoes. Other favorites are the open faced tavern ham sandwich topped with gruyere, apples, and grainy mustard. The smoked salmon and gruyere panini is also another tasty, comforting favorite. If you can make it through the meal somehow saving room for dessert they are always wonderful too, but I rarely ever find myself in this position. Four Dogs has a great value for their menu items as well. You could go to a mediocre and boring chain restaurant and have lunch with your family and friends, or you could go to Four Dogs and enjoy the whole experience AND have much better food for comparable pricing. HIghly recommended!

Service is good, outdoor patio is always a good time, but I have to give it 3 stars based on price. If everything was $3-4 less expensive, I wouldnt have noticed. $11 for French onion soup. Really. Its borderline absurdly expensive or what the meal is. Beer and liqour is priced ok, but be ready to open your wallet even if yor just getting apps

Cool vibe with awesome outdoor seating. In the summer they frequently have musicians playing. the food is good, i'm a huge fan of the pasta bolognese. the portions are large and they are willing to let you share. As the name might suggest they are open to leashed dogs joining guests in the outdoor area. All of the dogs I've seen here are really well behaved and super awesome. I never took my dog as she is a little too friendly and i didnt want her bugging people as they tried to enjoy their night out. I think most people understand this about their pet, so the majority of dogs that are there are very mellow. It adds a friendly neighborhood feel to the place. I've moved out of the area and into the city, but I'd definitely make the trip back to visit four dogs.

Been going to the Four Dogs for at least 15 years. Great tavern. Food is always very good with a lot of choice on the menu. Relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. Very good beer selection although a little heavy on the IPAs. I prefer ambers and brown ales. Great wings--get them buffalo as opposed to jerked

I do not know what the whining is about. Four Dogs is a pleasant tavern with burgers, nice appetizers, very good beer selection. Live music on weekends. My wife had a crabcake and the hummus appetizer was good. Relaxed outdoor seating and reasonable.Very pleasant atmosphere. What else do you want in a casual meal?

French Dip was so delish! Nice prime rib cuts, horseradish mayo, au jus, and perfect fries. Great beer selection, and kid friendly, too! The outdoor patio is bright, and relaxing. Dog-friendly, too. The menu had so many unique dishes, and I cannot wait to go back for more.

I don't know what the compaints are about. I have been to Four Dogs Tavern twice now and had a great experience both times. The first time, we sat up in th loft area. It was a cozy, quiet dinner with the family. The service was impeccable and very friendly. The restaurant is in a gorgeous old farm building with a lot of architectural character and warmth. It is clean and very well-appointed. The second time we went there, we sat out on the patio and had a great time. The patio itself is nothing remarkable but nice and clean. There is a small fountain and live music. It was a beautiful day. The service here, though perhaps a bit slower (it was a busy weekend night), was also very good. Some people had brought their dogs but they were all well-behaved and weren't a bother to anyone. As for the food, the Artisan Blend fondue is pretty good. The steaks were perfectly cooked and delicious. The scalloped potatoes are, by far, the best I've ever had. Irresistable. You can't go wrong with the Four Dogs Tavern. I will definitely be eating here again.

Some friends invited us to dinner here last night and we have found a new favorite spot! Great atmosphere outside on the patio with the fountain and we were close enough to hear the live music from the bar. Had about a 40 minute wait for outside, which was OK as we were more than happy to wait in the bar and enjoy a couple drinks. Once seated we decided so many things looked good on the menu, we wanted to try various things as a group. We ordered the fondue and meat/cheese plates for apps. Fondue was good but cooled pretty quickly. I'd try it again though. The tray was awesome! Fresh Parma cheese, great meats, olives! Wow, I could've had that as my dinner. It was as good as we've had in Italy! We then shared the mushroom flatbread, the margarita flatbread and the shrimp lajon (with bacon). Also had to have a side of the au gratin potatoes based on other yelps(they're worth it). Everything was very, very good. Service was pretty good on a busy night, very friendly and helpful, just busy. The total bill for the food was much less than expected so that was an added bonus. Overall great night with great friends and we have found a great new spot for us to enjoy!

Had dinner there last night and I must say it was fantastic! We started with the flat bread with goat cheese, mushrooms and a drizzle of spinach that was excellent. The mushroom soup was also very flavorful, and my entry was the ahi tuna, which was also tremendous. Service was very good, even though the place was jambed to the gills (Saturday night at 7:30). They had a band that was setting up when we arrived, but we didn't have the opportunity to check them out after dinner. Oh well, maybe next time.

We love Four Dogs! Sure any place that welcomes my pup in the summer on the patio is great...but in the winter Sunday brunch by the fire is awesome. We have been many times over the last 12 years since we moved here and are always thrilled with our food and service.

Went for the first time tonight. Nice atmosphere but bathroom was really old and nasty. Service was good and food was good but a bit pricy for sandwiches. My husband hates fries that are the frozen potato crusted kind. Obviously frozen. Flat breads looked great as well as the cheese plate. Going back. But not ordering anything with fries. Outside is lovely and we finished the night with a drink outside.

I used to make it a point to eat here when I visited family in the area, but my latest trip will be my last. You're paying for atmosphere, there's really no other reason to eat here. The last time I was there, I had ordered the French dip. It was literally half fat, and the other half resembled shoe leather. When I sent it back, the chef actually came out to talk to us, and I originally thought he was going to apologize. Boy was I surprised/disappointed. What I got was not an apology, but a lecture on how I was the only person to ever complain about that sandwich, and that I was welcome to eat somewhere else next time. What a pompous jerk. The food here has never been impressive, I don't know where he gets the attitude from. The owners need to shop around for a new chef, and let this guy find a job at some chain restaurant, where he belongs.

I went to Four Dogs Tavern years ago with my ex husband. It was not very memorable. However, last year I moved to West Chester and went to Four Dogs with a friend of mine. The food and atmosphere were great. Since then, I have been back many, many times and it has become one of our favorite places. We actually live in the boro of West Chester and can easily walk to some great spots, however, we find ourselves wanting to drive over to Four Dogs more and more. I think some of the bad reviews they have received are due to the fact that someone else owned it a few years ago. The new owner and chef have made many improvements. Also, you have to understand that when you go to 4 dogs, you should not expect fine dining however you will be getting a very, very good meal (their ahi tuna is incredible) in a great atmosphere. They do not take reservations for parties under 6; however, they do take call ahead seating an hour in advance for the patio.

I have been here a few times, and will not return. I had the French Onion soup and it was OK, not by any means great or worth the price. I agree with the others by saying their prices are insane. $11 for a bowl of soup? I have no problem paying for a good meal, but at their prices you should come away saying that is was excellent or perfect. There are many other places in West Chester, Downingtown & Thorndale to have a great meal at half the price. I do have to say the service was good.

Being that is was so nice last night my party and I ventured to Four Dogs. The outdoor space is absolutely amazing at dusk. For that feature alone I highly recommend going, well that and the good beer! The food is upscale bar food. There are some clear hits, as well as a total miss. This is why I didn't give them four stars. I ordered the pear salad, the margarita flat bread and because I was curious about it the cold potato leek soup special. The flat bread and salad were great. The soup, not so much! The soup was congealed and gummy making the texture gross. I could not eat it. Everyone else I dined with enjoyed their meal. The "Large Plates" are incredible large so be prepared to take a doggy bag.(I know bad pun, I couldn't help it!) My friends ordered the Tavern Ham, the Tuna and the Spicy Tuna special and everyone loved their dishes. Be careful the desserts are enormous! We ordered 1 6 layer chocolate cake for the four of us and it was plenty. The service didn't blow my socks off, but it wasn't horrible! I was there last week and loved the service. Again the best feature is the outdoor space, so if you want a place to hang out with a group of people outside on a summer evening... do it! Just be careful what you order, you might not love everything!

Great Burger and the service and patio is top notch. The menu is varied enough to be interesting, but not so many items that you worry about their ability ot execute on them. Great place to hang on the weekend, and take the dog. There was great live music there on a Sunday when we were there,

Food was good, expensive but good. Server was also thr bartender and despite having a full bar and several tables, I kept seeing her texting. Very annoying.

This place is great during the summer because of the out door sitting .. during the winter it can get a bit crowed . The food is good and always on par. Its a good local place with lots of locals at the bar . Overall its a ok place

A little background...my husband and I live in the area and have enjoyed eating outside at the Four Dogs for years. Especially since we now have a dog we love to take him with us as he is allowed on the patio. However, we went for dinner about 3 weeks ago...we both ordered the Oysters on the 1/2 shell...my husband and each got 3...well it turns out that one of his was bad. And by bad, I mean dead..he didn't realize it until he slurped it down, then was immediately repulsed at the flavor...turns out the shell has a hole in it and the oyster was dead and rotten. We called the waitress over to tell her. At the end of the meal, the oyster order was still on the bill! We called her over again and asked her to remove the charge, which she did. I was a little perturbed that a manager didn't come out to address the situation since you can become gravely ill from eating bad seafood. With that in mind, I called the restaurant after we left and left a message for the manager...my concern was not only for my husband's health, but also that they didn't serve anymore bad oysters. The next day I received a call back from the manager, Apple. She was very apologetic and explained that my husband had gotten sick after eating the oyster. (Major stomach issues the rest of the evening and the next morning). She assured me that no other oysters were bad and to ask for her when we came in again and she "would take care of us". We also received a call from our local health department and my husband explained what happened, since they (the restaurant) were required to report it. SO, cut to yesterday afternoon, we wanted to sit outside to have a late lunch with our dog and daughter...I asked if the manager was in and could we say hello....she came out and I introduced ourselves, she remembered us from the incident right away. We ordered some small plates and a couple of drinks and when the bill came, I was suprised to say that she did not follow through with her promise to "take care of us"...I wasn't expecting to NOT pay, I was expecting maybe the drinks to be comped or something....no, nada, zip. I was too embarrassed to say something to the waitress. Long story short, we'll be looking for another place to eat outside...their food is overpriced and not very good for the price you're paying. I am extremely dissapointed with her (Apple's) lack of follow through regarding making things right with formerly loyal customers. We will not return!

The menu is very interesting and fun and the food is always delicious...have brought several out of town friends here and everybody loves it. The prices are not cheap but the portions are huge....we often split entrees or sandwiches and the restaurant is totally accommodating to that. My only negative is they don't take reservations so the wait can be very long. We tend to only go on off days and times because we don't want to wait over an hour for a table.

This is one of my favorite places for dinner or just to meet some friends for a drink. I find myself eating here almost every week now. Its a great atmosphere with an open fireplace for the winter, and a outdoor patio for the warmer months. They have an asortment of great food from burgers and sandwiches to steaks and fish. They also have great deserts which are a little pricy, but they are huge so consider splitting it. This is a great place to go if you are looking for really good food in a great atmosphere.

It's a historic Tavern. You feel like George Washington could have sat down next to you, but not in a stuffy bad kind of way. It's a good way to spend an afternoon lunch with your senior citizen parents. Everyone loved the fondue. They never change their happy hour food specials, always wings and the standard flat bread pizza. Beer is cheap. Service was excellent. The place is always busy. The portions are quite large, but $15 dollars for a fancy ham and cheese sandwhich? I would recommend shrinking the portion size down and cheapening things up by 20%..at least on the Tavern side. I'd be there all the time. Maybe they found their sweet spot with the pricing and the amount of customers though.

This was my second time there. We had a good dinner couple years ago and since we were around the neighborhood, we decided to stop in for lunch. We sat on an outside table and the scenery was great until the fire alarm from the fire station nearby ruined it. The wait staff was quite slow even though it was not that busy on a Tuesday afternoon. We ordered Reuben sandwich and one beer each, and both were ok, but not great. You would expect a little more nowadays from a fifty dollar lunch for two.

We have seen the Four Dogs in many different incarnations over the years, and the latest is one of above-average food in a wonderful outdoor patio atmosphere, but I agree with many of the more recent posters that the food is way overpriced. My wife had the $11 bowl of french onion soup and I had the $14 reuben last night. The sandwich was big enough for two meals, so I have no qualms with that, but the soup? Theremay be one or two things on the menu that weren't in double figures! We also had the crab appetizer and the marguerita flatbread, with two drinks each, and spent nearly $90 with tip. I think we'll go back to our happy hour at Firecreek in Downingtown and get fed for $40, and save the F.D. for when there's some OT in the paycheck.

It was hard for us not to give 5 stars. This place is just great. Only 2 miles from popular downtown boro of West Chester, situated in the quaint Village of Marshallton, right next door to their fancier restaurant, The Marshallton Inn. Back to The Four Dogs. An extensive, affordable menu and a newly expanded large outdoor dining area of which many nights they offer live music. This old, converted barn offers cool, country atmosphere, excellent food and great service. If you're looking for a casual night out we recommend this spot.

Our friends who live in the beautiful area of west chester took us to the 4 dogs our last day in pa. The service which was not perfect ...ie brought me the wrong beer to begain with and the only reason i figured that out was the second beer which she forgot to bring but finally remembered was the right beer, she apoligized and said she forgot...now it was sat. afternoon a beautiful day and the place was PACKED. Our friends ordered the fish and chips which came in a bucket w/4 beautiful piecec of fish and seamed like a bottomless bucket of fries,I had the burg which was delicious and my wife had the jerk wings, the patio setting is lovely and our sever was fun and chipper but streched a little thin...but to me this is a GREAT place w/Great food, beer on tap and setting

Food - Horrible! Service - Horrible! Ambiance - this gets the one star... The outside of the building is WONDERFUL! but don't get your hopes up. The owners have not done well. The bar area is the only place worthwhile, the rest of the seating is commonplace at best. The bar has a working gas fireplace and this is very nice, but they have put a two seat table right in front of it so guest there block the others' view. Futhermore the tables are not arranged well to make use of the fireplace. Now for the food. I ordered a special lentil soup of the day and it was tepid, tasteless and garnished with slivers of a very tasteless, greasy and cold sausage. I then had the chicken BLT which was almost inedible. It seemed as if it were made a week ago and kept in the frig until I arrived. It had barely lowered to room temperature when it was served to me. I almost broke a tooth on the bacon since it was so old and so cold.... The beer was good, but they don't make that, though they offered a good selection. If you really have to try this place, drink and eat very lightly if at all. If the same owner also owns the Marshalton Inn next door, I would worry about the food there as well. Again the Inn is beautiful on the outside, but beware...

This is a great spot to come on a beautiful summer evening and sit on the spacious patio (which is dog friendly, yay!). We would kick back with a beer and enjoy the night, as our dog sniffed around the table or sipped water from his bowl. On some evenings, they have live music outside too. The food has always been good. We've had the crab nachos, gazpacho, watermelon and feta salad, among others--all tasty. I will say the wait can be ungodly long is you come during "peak" hours on a late spring/summer night. We've always gone on the earlier side and have rarely had to wait. The interior of the restaurant is rather dark and nothing to write home about and the bathroom is a little awkward with half partitions (!)-- but we always come for the patio experience. Check it out if you're in the area-- it's a little bit off the beaten path, but worth searching out (especially if you like to dine with your pooches!).

I have been a long time customer of Four Dogs. I tend to go for lunch but have also eaten dinner there many times. It has a very nice atmosphere indoors and out and for that it is mostly why I go. The wait staff is just OK. For the most part i have never had a waiter who was incredibly smiley and friendly, they tend to be kind of "dry". Also and more inportantly they aren't very attentive once you get your food-- I am almost always looking for them to get me another drink--isn't this how restaurants make their money--alcohol!? The food is good, some of the dishes are very good, but some are just OK. Why you ask do i keep coming back? I suppose I was seduced by the atmosphere--very secluded and quiet, the antithesis of Main St. ,West Chester. But in going to other places especially lunch I have finally realized one thing--Four Dogs is over priced. It is safe to say that almost everything on the menu is about $3-4 more than it should be. A cup of French Onion soup is $11! OK, it has artisanal cheese in it, does that really require it to be that much more than anywhere else. If you are going there for lunch--count on about $40 each for lunch ( one alcohol drink, a soup and potstickers) that was my biil recently when I was there. I was with a group but we all genreally had the same thing--everyone only had one drink from the bar and an entree , no desserts. One other thing is I am getting trired of the menu it has bben the same for quite a while. The one area I'd like to see added to is the salad section, especially now that it is Spring/Summer a nice fresh salad would be nice. I have had enough of the pecan /goat cheese routine on my salad--that's winter fare. I'll be back to dine but sparingly.

My wife and I live very close to Four Dogs and have visited many times in the past, mostly with 'average' to 'decent' results - never anything to knock your socks off. This evening - well - I'd love to review but we could not even get service. After waiting for close to 10 minutes at the outdoor receptionist stand I wandered inside. One employee whizzed by and said "I'll be right with you". After 5 minutes and no employee I decided to regroup with my wife outside, now with 2-3 other parties waiting. A woman seated nearby, who apparently used to work there, decided she would seat all of us. Fair enough. We were seated amidst a sea of tables that were either overflowing with dirty dishes from guests long gone, or equally hungry patrons waiting for food and/or drinks. After waiting close to 15 more minutes we bolted. We were both hungry and tired of waiting for what would likely be crappy service. Let me be clear - I don't blame the wait staff - the 2 servers I saw were running from one end of the place to the other. Where was management? Why were they so obviously understaffed and things were so chaotic? There is no reason to wait close to 30 minutes with zero service and no manager in sight. We'll try Four Dogs again later in the Summer - but this aborted visit did not fill us with confidence.

a group of us went last night, we came from west chester and two of our group had been there before. it was a bit crowded (fathers day weekend maybe?) so we waited at the bar for 15 minutes which was strange because there was an empty four top right next to us which was where we ended up being sat. anyway, the beer selection was good and varied, the service was relaxed, but good and the food... well the food was good, but in my opinion way overpriced (18 for mac and cheese? in a bar?) my date and I split the crab nachos to start and they were awesome . my dinner was the fish taco which was a breaded filet on top of a salad which had some kind of vinegrette dressing mixed in with the greens and carrots and cukes on top of the fish was an avocado sour cream. on the side I was given three tortillas. I was game for something new, but I'll tell you what if I was really in the mood for tacos and any taste resembling Mexican food I've been way disappointed. the others at our table loved the shrimp dumplings and pesto steamers appetizers and for dinners the filet went over really well, the fish and chips were good and the crabcakes were tasty but small portioned. the bar seemed like a good mix of hipsters and older married folk all cheering wildly over whatever golf game was on last night. I would go again but it wouldn't be my first pick. live music thurs, sat and sund (over by 8) dj dance party fridays

My husband and I stopped here on the way home from a day trip with our two black labs. I knew from a friend that you could take dogs onto the outdoor patio. Not only were the dogs allowed on the patio but the waitress also brought water and a bowl for our dogs. The food was delicious and the service was good but I did find it a little overpriced for a sandwich and burger. However, considering that the food and service was good AND I can bring my dogs, I would definitely go again.

This is a true hidden gem. Right off of Marshallton Thorndale road I the quaint town of Marshallton. The is quite eclectic. Today my lovely bride and I shared a buffalo chicken flatbread and a wonderful cheese plate. The plate consisted of Espisses A Nrie like cheese, Four me d'Albert a blue cheese, and a aged Gouda with natural crackers and fig jam. This was heaven on earth. Bobi had Yuengling and I had a Chardonnay. This is a perfect afternoon date. You have to try this place. We will be returning. One interest in benefit of this place is you can drying your dog tho dinner.

We came with an extremely large (over 25 people) group and had reserved the big green tent outdoors. Our server was a little "snippy" but very efficient and a good server. She just seemed a bit pissed off for most of the time we were there. Note: they will NOT split the check on weekends, The food was very salty and heavy (especially what we ordered) but presented nicely. Most of all though - it was over priced. $15.50 for a pulled pork sandwich? $17.50 for my 10 year old's fish & chips? Ugh. Oh - and sodas are $3.25 each NO refills. OUCH! But there are cute doggies there (a very dog friendly place) and it's great fun to sit outside. We do not live near here, and unless we are going canoeing again and North brook or coming here with locals we likely won't be back any time soon.

I have started, deleted, restarted this review several times now because I'm having a hard time writing it. In fact, this meal was last summer and I'm just now posting it. My wife and some of our friends love this place. There's lots to love. It has a awesome patio. The food is generally really good. Service is a little bit spotty but our service this evening was very good. Writing this is tough because I really WANT to like this place. However, what happened during this meal though is pretty much inexcusable and has ended any positive feelings I've had for this place. Everything we ordered with the exception of my Angus burger was delightful. The rustic nachos, the macaroni and cheese with pancetta, the pear salad; all really really exceptional. Then there's the burger. The first attempt was overcooked. I had ordered it medium. Occasionally burgers are overcooked because they continue the cook while awaiting a food runner. This was not the case. The burger was just plain overcooked and it was hot inside and out when I got to me. When the server checked on us I asked him to have it remade. The second burger came out, also overcooked. At this point I was pretty hungry and decided I was going to eat the damn thing anyway. The server came back and checked on me and my burger. I showed it to him, well done. He immediately said he'd take it off of the bill for us and apologized. That's the right thing to do, so kudos to our server Brian for that. I was halfway through my Angus burger when I bit into something hard and gritty. Upon further inspection I found what I had crunched into was a small rock. Not a peppercorn, not sea salt or other seasoning. It was a silvery metallic 1.5 mm-ish rock. The kind that would piss you off if you wound up with it in your shoe. The kind that in my estimation would only of wound up in my burger because it'd been placed there, or the burger was dropped "accidentally" on the floor. If you've ever seen the movie "Waiting", you might swear off of sending food back to the kitchen when eating out. I thought this place would be above that sort of nonsense, but..... I asked to see the manager, Apple. I complimented her on what was good and empathized with how tough the business is. I then calmly explained how unhappy I was with the experience and how this had sullied the place for me. She apologized, but did not offer to get me anything else. Also, when we got the check my burger was still on it. I complained and it was removed. I did call the owner to tell him about my experience. We traded voice mail once, the I never heard back from him a second time (I had called him twice). Unfortunate experience all around. Hopefully for the owners sake they don't have too many customers experience their restaurant this way. I may stop in for a drink, but forget about me ever dining there again.

You cannot beat the atmosphere here, when the weather is nice. They will even let you bring your dog and give the pooch a bowl of water. Sit outside, enjoy some great drinks, apps, and food. OH! Make sure you order the lemon meringue ice cream pie. It's life altering.

I came here with my mother and step father on Sunday evening before driving to Philadelphia to go see The Who at the Wells Fargo Center. I ordered the crab cake special. It was excellent! fresh and very little filler. I would have preferred it if the cocktail sauce had a bit more horseradish in it, but other than that, it was wonderful. The prices did seem a bit high for the portion sizes, however, but for the clientele that they cater to, it didn't surprise me. Overall, a wonderful experience.

This happening restaurant, in Marshalltown, appears from first glance to be a wonderful place to have lunch on a sunny afternoon. There seem to be two sides to this establishment, one being an upscale restaurant indoors; and the other being a more relaxed setting outside on a large patio. As my friends and I walked up, we saw that most of the tables were filled and the chatter of conversation and clinking of glasses filled the air. We chose this restaurant for its reputation for allowing dogs to accompany their owners into the outdoor patio area, as one person in our group had brought her canine friend along for our afternoon walk. After a brief wait, we were shown to our table and given menus by the host. The rustic nature of the outdoor seating was immediately apparent when we had to find a few chips of wood on the ground to prop up the legs of our wobbly table. We briefly looked over the menus and decided on what drinks to order before our waiter arrived. And then we waited... and waited... After twenty minutes of waiting, I got up and approached a manager to ask about our lack of service. I explained that we had been seated for a while but had yet to see a waiter or to order drinks. The manager seemed slightly annoyed by my interruption and gave me a curt "ok" in an unconcerned manner. After returning to our table, a young man came up and asked if we had a server yet. We replied that we didn't and he took our drink orders. When he returned, he brought with him the waters and soda for my fellow diners as well as my beer. I had ordered an Allagash White ($7) and was surprised to find it served to me in a plastic cup. Now I'm not adverse to drinking beer out of plastic cups when I am at a backyard bbq or a friend's party, but I was surprised to see the lack of at least a decent pint glass at a "tavern". After depositing the plastic cups on the table, our waiter took our food order. And then we waited... My friends and I talked about our walk that day, shared thoughts, and drank our drinks. We had a lot of time to talk as we waited and waited for our appetizer. We even had time to talk about the long wait for our appetizer during the nearly forty minutes it took for the Rustic Nachos to arrive. When it finally arrived, the chips and pico and salsa verde were stacked precariously on a narrow wooden plank. (maybe it was the arduous task of spreading out a meager portion of nachos on the rustic shingle that took so long?) We ate our nachos and talked some more, and then the empty plank and our silverware were cleared. And then we waited... After another twenty minutes, I got up and approached the same manager again to ask if there was a problem in the kitchen. She seemed more annoyed this time. Without giving me much of a response, she turned and went inside. (I presume to inquire about our food.) Slightly confused by her nonchalant attitude, I returned to our table. Shortly thereafter, our waiter appeared with our entrees. He seemed apologetic and explained that he had just seated a very large party. We ate our late arriving food, which was average in quality with no real high notes to mention, but the dining experience as a whole was soured by the long wait between courses and the complete lack of concern by management. I can understand, and accept to some extent, when a busy restaurant or even issues in the kitchen might affect the timing of service. But there is no excuse for a clear lack of concern on the part of management towards the dining experience of any guest. Especially not twice in the same meal. Good food, even mediocre food, can be seasoned with excellent service and leave the patron happy and willing to return. Conversely, excellent food can be spoiled by bad service. Unfortunately for me and my friends, the Four Dogs Tavern left us dissatisfied and unhappy. Foodthot.com

I love the concept of Four Dogs, it's a chill spot to grab a drink and hang out. Food wise though, it's definitely a bit overpriced. I went with my fiancé while visiting family in PA and just the two of us racked up a $100 bill on a cheese board and two items. My fiancé was raving about his pulled pork sandwich and thought that it was amazing. My beet and goat cheese salad was very good too. I do think that the atmosphere is warm and cozy, Four Dogs has a "pub" like feel to it. It was very dimly lit and there was a good sized crowd there. They have dog decorations all over the place which is also really cute. I had a good experience overall and would come back here in the future but would not go out of my way. I'd like to explore other restaurants in PA :-)

This is the first place we ate at after moving to the area and Wow what a way to start!!! I would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for the cheesy plastic chairs and Bud Lite umbrella we were seated at. Honestly, that's our Only knock...because there is classy casual and there is too casual...considering the menu, especially. Speaking of the menu and everything else there- 5 stars all the way!! Menu was excellent, food was impeccably prepared and presented, server was super informative, friendly and efficient, great ambiance sitting outside, etc. Will go back again and again and will have my fingers crossed that they've improved their outdoor furniture just a little. ;)

Often enjoy a lunchtime escape to this quiet spot. Friendly, great drinks whether you are in the cozy bar area in the cold weather or at your choice of an outdoor shady or sunny spot on a nice day nice day. The food is french bistro inspired, with fondue selections, cheese plates, and "something for everyone (kid friendly too ). Just enjoyed a lunch of a custom made "skinny margarita", cup of tomato bisque and a delicious pear salad and house made ricotta flavored ice cream. Hope to be back soon!

The only good thing about this place is the mac-n-cheese. I have come here for over ten years as a customer. We have come here for five years in a row for Mothers Day. They don't take reservations. We stood outside for 90 minutes, waiting for a table as we looked at three empty tables outside. The hostess staff, teenagers, clearly does not understand that a mother never wants to watch her child stand, in the sun, hungry, just chatted amongst themselves. We were finally told, after asking about the wait (for a second time), they had immediate seating inside. But, this was a separate list. It never occurred to the host staff to mention this, even when I specifically inquired about other options. We will not be going back. Such a shame when we have been loyal customers for a decade. The service here, especially the host staff lacks experience and understanding.

A really cozy place to meet up with friends for dinner and drinks. Going there for the first time in a fall month, I felt like I was driving in the middle of no where on Rt 162 for a long time before I found this, but when I got there I realized how wrong I was. The place was packed! I tried the mushroom and goat cheese flatbread which said it was made for one person...more like a Gosslin family of 8. I also tried a crab nacho, which was very tasty. Didn't have any drinks but my friends that did were very happy with what they got. Oh the pricey side but a nice place to go every once in awhie.

All I have to say, is the service was less than to be desired. I guess I needed a dog to get service. Needless to say, I'll NEVER go back there... I should have read the other posts, it looks like they haven't changed much...

Stopped by after a canoe trip at Northbrook (wonderful trip). We were seated outside under a canopy. Beautiful weather and quite comfortable. Our kids loved the dog customers that were lounging with their owners. Menu was varied and everyone enjoyed their choices. I particularly enjoyed he fish tacos. It was a busy Sunday afternoon but service was attentive and sharp. Definitely will return.

Food is great! My husband and I have to order the rustic nachos (with blackened chicken) every time! Very friendly environment, we love to sit outside. Unfortunately some of the menu is overpriced. Their French onion soup is $11, where most places in West chester you can get one just as good, such as Iron Hill for half the price. Other than the prices, we've never had a bad experience.

Good food, pub-like atmosphere and solid service. Great beers on tap and bartenders are always attentive. The one qualm I have with this place is the prices. Although the food is good and the menu offers a lot, the prices are a high for high for what is offered. A Turkey burger at Four dogs is $15.00 and an entree is upwards of $17. I wish they would lower their prices on sandwiches and salads as I'd be more likely to frequent the joint. I did give the place 4 stars though because dogs are welcome (and served cold water), the atmosphere is fun, drinks are always good and the food is delicious (although pricey).
